A week after his hip operation Tommy Haas comments on the current state of his health and the reasons for his having to take some time off.

Tommy Haas, 31, has suffered a setback. On Friday, the German underwent an operation in Vail, Colorado, where Dr. Marc J. Philippon performed surgery on the tennis pro's right hip. Tommy Haas: "I had to have the operation now. The pain was simply too great." What does the operation mean for the future career of Haas, whose last appearance was in Delray Beach in late February? His agent Lars Schriewer: "Tommy has been operated upon by the best medical doctor in this field. He is in the best of hands. Every thing else remains to be seen."

Yet again Tommy Haas had to retire early at the Delray Beach ATP tournament and dropped out after the first round only. The first seeded tournament winner of 2006 lost 6-7 (3), 5-7 to the Russian Teimuras Gabaschwili. "He was there at the right time with a couple of brilliant hits", the German praised his opponent. "There were several opportunities, but somehow I just couldn't make the points, that would have turned the match around for me", Haas admitted after the match.

This year Tommy Haas dropped out of the ATP tournament in Memphis after the first round already. The German-American lost the kick-off match against his good Belgian friend Xavier Malisse in three sets 3-6, 6-4, 4-6. Previously, the German from Hamburg had been very successful at the Morgan Keegan Championships where managed to win three times (1999, 2006 and 2007).

This year's SAP Open are already over for Tommy Haas. The no 17 in the world had a bad day in San José playing the Uzbek Denis Istomin to whom he lost 6-7 (3), 2-6. In his private life though things couldn't go any better for the 31-year old: the German born in Hamburg announced his wedding to fiancé Sara planned “for Mai or summer”.

The first hurdle is taken: Tommy Haas triumphed over American Devin Britton 6-4, 7-6 (3) in the first round of the SAP Open after 73 minutes. One break was enough for the 31-year old to claim the match. Fourth seeded Haas now faces Denis Istomin (Uzbekistan) in the round of the last sixteen.

This week will be the first time for Tommy Haas to pick up his racket again following his third round out at the Australian Open. The backaches putting a strain on the German in Melbourne are cured fortunatley. Now the Geman from Hamburg wants to re-establish last year's success with his seventh tournament participation in the city at the south end of San Francisco Bay.

Tommy Haas had to succumb to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Saturday: The French prevailed 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 and thus saw to it, that the third week of the Australian Open proceed without any German participation.

This thursday, Tommy Haas proceeded to the third round of this years' Australian Open in a real tennis nail biter. The German prevailed over the world no. 36 Janko Tipsarevic 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 after 200 nerve racking minutes.

Tommy Haas reached the second round of the Australian Open. In the end the German from Hamburg deserved the victory over his fellow countryman Simon Greul from Stuttgart 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-2, 6-1.

Germany's number one Tommy Haas will face Simon Greul from Stuttgart at the first Grand Slam tournament of this year, the Australian Open, starting Monday.
